I use to watch my mum play this when I was 5 or 6 year old. My mum was a concert pianist. It brings tears to my eyes even today I can see her playing this. She was a wonderful lady and brilliant pianist. I am 75 year old now and miss her very much. God bless her.

I was eleven when I first heard this piece of music. I listened to it on a battery operated radio in a wee cottage in the Perthshire Highlands of Scotland. (Just after the war) I had no idea what I was listening to, only that it touched my soul. I sat down and wrote to the BBC and waited. For years I treasured the formal letter on embossed BBC letterhead thanking me for my enquiry and naming the piece I had listened to. It moves me to this day.
I like that seeing dozens of performances, years apart sometimes, you can decide what you love & then buy great quality recordings. I love full orchestras but I do wish the YEAR of the performance was included.

I switch back and forth watching both Martha and Yuja Wang perform this amazing piece trying to figure out who is better and couldn't so I came to the conclusion " It be pretty close, I'd hate to have to live on the difference".

Concerts like this are rare. Despite the limitations of the microphones and recorders of the time, Martha, in a faster tempo than usual, had with Charles a brilliant presentation, very special. Thank you Martha, for this gift.
I still have this LP, belonged to my father. He played it in the 60's. Everytime I hear this it makes me cry, seems this piece is deeply embedded in my soul. He died 1971 aged 35. The piece is a treasured memory of days gone by.
First Bourne whats crazy is she's always been like that. In the 60s she had a recording of chopin scherzo 2, and her octaves are still out of this world
I always thought that this musical theme is so incredibly beautiful and touching that when Tchaikovsky wrote it down he was so astonished himself that he couldn't get it to be developed as it would deserve. As a matter of fact, the entire concert is about resisting the temptation to get back to the main theme as soon as possible.
I just started playing piano last year, age 47. Such an amazing instrument and feeling. My teacher introduced me to Martha. Watching this performance is so emotional, inspiring and just pure magic.

I have listened to this several times, no other recording or version of this piece is as beautiful and perfect as this one. Quality is fantastic for 1975 as well.

50 years ago I was studying at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels and my teacher Grumiaux said:"have you heard the latest recording of Tchaikovsky with Argerich"? It was world news between musicians. Since that time on Argerich was my favorite pianist......until now.
My grandmother was notorious for playing this over and over again on the record player when my dad was young (early 70s), along with Rach 3. He said she used to listen to it so often that he and everyone in the house got sick of it, but she loved it still. I think that was partly what prompted my dad to start learning the piano. Today my dad is a professional cellist and I wouldn't be a violinist if it wasn't for him. I had the fortune of seeing this concerto played by Dmitry Masleev (first prize winner of TCH15) a few years ago in my little town with the Moscow State Symphony Orchestra conducted by Pavel Kogan. What an incredible concert. The crowd clapped before the first movement was over and in between movements, but honestly I couldn't care less because it deserved such a rapturous response. One of the most incredible concerts I ever saw. My sister was there as well and actually got to speak to, along with her class, ask Mr Masleev questions. He didn't speak any english so they needed someone to translate, and he said he practiced 8 hours a day. That blew my mind a little bit.
I approve, genuinely. The uniqueness of Martha comes through her progressiveness. As a pianist, she has grown both emotionally and musically to reach a sense of ‘oneness’ with what she is playing. Unlike other virtuosos which are incapable of progressing as they become older, Martha gives music a multi-faceted beauty that is hard to achieve when playing such pieces repetitively, according to the classical repertoire. I approve.
It's my dream to see this piece performed live. It's a very important piece to me, and I listen to it whenever I'm feeling really down. I think I would be crying in the theatre if I heard it in person, but ever since I first heard it, I knew this piece would be part of me forever.

Frater Tenc Also I could never manage playing such syncopation on the piano! Some of the piano parts have two totally different time-shifted rhythms that are wayyy out from each other. Even many bassists and drummers would have trouble individually playing the two separate timings.

Lol, ironically - while I agree with you, and that Argerich showed some of the greatest instrumental grasp the world has ever known - I think in this case she is smiling to herself because she hit a small wrong note. She does that sometimes! Haha
Most people, even top pianists, would be sweating from the concentration and sheer exhaustion of the piece and she is just smiling like it's a cakewalk. Just having fun, she says.

To me, without a doubt, Tchaikovsky's Piano Concertos No 1 is the most spectacular piece of music ever written. I've listened to this recording back to back three times and could just keep it on replay all the time. I never get tired of it.
This became an obsession to me at 21 when I first began listening to 'classical' music. Now I'm teaching myself the piano I plan on learning it in 2018.
Andrew Beadle hey Andrew just thought I'd share my experience with you. I heard it at the Free Trade Hall in Manchester my home town when I was 11yrs, obviously it blew my mind and I became totally obsessed with it. I decided I must learn it so I went and bought the score and started studying it. I could play the into almost emediately, I just practised the passages I could play with moderate difficulty and then gradually over about 4yrs I'd nailed it. But I was just a kid, I spent the rest of my life to date and the love affair I have with it, a rich and enduring true love for it, perfecting and tweaking it. Don't be daunted by it, break it up into small phrases and take your time. As a tip I think the 2nd mvt is the hardest of the whole piece! Very best of love with it I'd say, you don't need luck, you just need to love it to master it

I lost my 93-year old mother last year. One could say "we were prepared". There is not a day gone by I do not think about her every little move or gesture. It is not a heart breaking sadness. It is like a profound LOVE and care that crosses the boundary of life and death. I am no longer afraid of my own mortality. For the first time I feel there is someone on the other side waiting for me.
The miracle one must stop to consider when listening to and watching this performance is how Tchaikovsky came up with and decided on the placement in the score of each of the notes. Yes, this is a work we all have heard hundreds, perhaps thousands of times. Some may call it a warhorse, but there is no denying its majesty. No less incredible than this performance by M. Argerich is the genius behind the actual composition.

I've watched Lang Lang. Then, I've watched Yuja Wang. Lastly, I'm watching Martha Argerich. I'd say... This performance of hers takes my breath away more so than Lang Lang's and Yuja Wang's combined.
@@olliemartinelli4034 I think a lot of pianists are constrained by the technical difficulties in the piece like the octave sections, but Argerich is able to bring everything up to the intended tempo and truly able to play the piece as she wants it to sound.

I love each and every performance she made and I like her interpretation. I watch every video of her performances and she inspires me.But, as I watched Martha Argerich's performance, I have to say that Martha Argerich's take on this piece surpasses both of theirs. But each to their own. Every performer is unique in their own way and both Yuja Wang and Martha Argerich happened to be among my favourite pianists.

I see all these comments about hearing this music because their parents played it on their phonograph. The best gift my mom ever gave me was the gift of music. It’s strange, though. Her tastes were more of the Bach/Haydn/Mozart ilk, whereas my affections lie in Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninov, Bruckner and so forth. It’s not my fave Tchaikovsky (that’s reserved for his 4th symphony). Dutoit back in the 80’s did this incredible recording of Holst The Planets, nominated for a Grammy. Unbelievable.
Argerich is such a beautiful woman and in more ways than the obvious. She is also the embodiment of a class act. Then there are her virtuosity and musicality and, well, you see ...
The keyboard tigress on the loose! The amazing thing about Argerich is that her technical accomplishments are achieved with without fuss or theatrics, in fact nonchalantly. The speed and precision of her double octaves for example is electrifying. Having lauded her all encompassing technique, there is also an innate musical sensitivity and insight on display. A remarkable virtuoso whom is assured a place in annals of piano legends.

Funny thing is, Argerich (pianist) and Dutoit (conductor) were married from 1969-1973, divorcing 2 years before this concert. They continued to perform and record together obviously.
definitely Martha, numerous divorces, abandoned all her kids for the music, etc... Great pianist, but terrible wife and mother. She sacrificed her chance at a family to become one of the greatest pianist.

Her technical skill in the cadenza in the last movement (the octave passages) is unsurpassed. I have never heard any other pianist come close to it1 LOVE her!
Simply unbelievable ... I never liked Tchaikovsky but listened to this because my wife told me that this was her prefered piece when she was young (in the meawhile we both have the 70 behind us) ... and I still do not like Tchaikovsky but once I started to watch Mrs Argerich I could not stop until the grand finale. Thirty four minutes I had the impression that Tchaikovsky wrote this with the thought in mind "now lets see who can play this" and look - there are geniuses who play this - and not simply "play" - but with a tear causing virtuosity, with deep feeling paired with ultimate precision - and all this by heart
Her recording of it just a few years ago I think is better. The orchestra in several spots during this performance just wasn't keeping up with her tempo. In her recent performance I just don't hear the timing issues.

50 years ago I was studying at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels and my teacher Grumiaux said:"have you heard the latest recording of Tchaikovsky with Argerich"? It was world news between musicians. Since that time on Argerich was my favorite pianist......until now.
Great tempo. Martha has been one of the world's greatest pianists for over 60 years.
My grandmother was notorious for playing this over and over again on the record player when my dad was young (early 70s), along with Rach 3. He said she used to listen to it so often that he and everyone in the house got sick of it, but she loved it still. I think that was partly what prompted my dad to start learning the piano. Today my dad is a professional cellist and I wouldn't be a violinist if it wasn't for him. I had the fortune of seeing this concerto played by Dmitry Masleev (first prize winner of TCH15) a few years ago in my little town with the Moscow State Symphony Orchestra conducted by Pavel Kogan. What an incredible concert. The crowd clapped before the first movement was over and in between movements, but honestly I couldn't care less because it deserved such a rapturous response. One of the most incredible concerts I ever saw. My sister was there as well and actually got to speak to, along with her class, ask Mr Masleev questions. He didn't speak any english so they needed someone to translate, and he said he practiced 8 hours a day. That blew my mind a little bit.

Now I am 63 years old, and this music sound like the time would stop forever.
I approve, genuinely. The uniqueness of Martha comes through her progressiveness. As a pianist, she has grown both emotionally and musically to reach a sense of ‘oneness’ with what she is playing. Unlike other virtuosos which are incapable of progressing as they become older, Martha gives music a multi-faceted beauty that is hard to achieve when playing such pieces repetitively, according to the classical repertoire. I approve.

Frater Tenc Also I could never manage playing such syncopation on the piano! Some of the piano parts have two totally different time-shifted rhythms that are wayyy out from each other. Even many bassists and drummers would have trouble individually playing the two separate timings.

Lol, ironically - while I agree with you, and that Argerich showed some of the greatest instrumental grasp the world has ever known - I think in this case she is smiling to herself because she hit a small wrong note. She does that sometimes! Haha
Most people, even top pianists, would be sweating from the concentration and sheer exhaustion of the piece and she is just smiling like it's a cakewalk. Just having fun, she says.

To me, without a doubt, Tchaikovsky's Piano Concertos No 1 is the most spectacular piece of music ever written. I've listened to this recording back to back three times and could just keep it on replay all the time. I never get tired of it.

Andrew Beadle hey Andrew just thought I'd share my experience with you. I heard it at the Free Trade Hall in Manchester my home town when I was 11yrs, obviously it blew my mind and I became totally obsessed with it. I decided I must learn it so I went and bought the score and started studying it. I could play the into almost emediately, I just practised the passages I could play with moderate difficulty and then gradually over about 4yrs I'd nailed it. But I was just a kid, I spent the rest of my life to date and the love affair I have with it, a rich and enduring true love for it, perfecting and tweaking it. Don't be daunted by it, break it up into small phrases and take your time. As a tip I think the 2nd mvt is the hardest of the whole piece! Very best of love with it I'd say, you don't need luck, you just need to love it to master it

I lost my 93-year old mother last year. One could say "we were prepared". There is not a day gone by I do not think about her every little move or gesture. It is not a heart breaking sadness. It is like a profound LOVE and care that crosses the boundary of life and death. I am no longer afraid of my own mortality. For the first time I feel there is someone on the other side waiting for me.

The miracle one must stop to consider when listening to and watching this performance is how Tchaikovsky came up with and decided on the placement in the score of each of the notes. Yes, this is a work we all have heard hundreds, perhaps thousands of times. Some may call it a warhorse, but there is no denying its majesty. No less incredible than this performance by M. Argerich is the genius behind the actual composition.

@@olliemartinelli4034 I think a lot of pianists are constrained by the technical difficulties in the piece like the octave sections, but Argerich is able to bring everything up to the intended tempo and truly able to play the piece as she wants it to sound.

I love each and every performance she made and I like her interpretation. I watch every video of her performances and she inspires me.But, as I watched Martha Argerich's performance, I have to say that Martha Argerich's take on this piece surpasses both of theirs. But each to their own. Every performer is unique in their own way and both Yuja Wang and Martha Argerich happened to be among my favourite pianists.

I love this artist Martha Argerich. She is so talented as well as beautiful. She plays with her soul. There is no one in the word like her. I am honored to be able to listen to this piece by the world's greatest pianist!
I see all these comments about hearing this music because their parents played it on their phonograph. The best gift my mom ever gave me was the gift of music. It’s strange, though. Her tastes were more of the Bach/Haydn/Mozart ilk, whereas my affections lie in Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninov, Bruckner and so forth. It’s not my fave Tchaikovsky (that’s reserved for his 4th symphony). Dutoit back in the 80’s did this incredible recording of Holst The Planets, nominated for a Grammy. Unbelievable.

Funny thing is, Argerich (pianist) and Dutoit (conductor) were married from 1969-1973, divorcing 2 years before this concert. They continued to perform and record together obviously.

I never liked Tchaikovsky but listened to this because my wife told me that this was her prefered piece when she was young (in the meawhile we both have the 70 behind us) ... and I still do not like Tchaikovsky but once I started to watch Mrs Argerich I could not stop until the grand finale.
Thirty four minutes I had the impression that Tchaikovsky wrote this with the thought in mind "now lets see who can play this" and look - there are geniuses who play this - and not simply "play" - but with a tear causing virtuosity, with deep feeling paired with ultimate precision - and all this by heart
Martha Argerich is a goddess; she exudes perfectionism & beauty through every single note.

Her recording of it just a few years ago I think is better. The orchestra in several spots during this performance just wasn't keeping up with her tempo. In her recent performance I just don't hear the timing issues.
